A10 flys with half wing3/15/2023 ![]() ![]() That said, for a close air support plane, they aren't probably going to be operating in an environment where heavy machine gun fire is super likely. Protection against a 23mm soviet incendiary round likely not needed, protection against a 7.62x54r at 500 meters would be good still, protection against 14.5mm, that might not be a terrible thing to consider too. Something that can fly in fairly close, has some survivability measures incorporated to withstand light ground fire. The air force is likely much better off with something like the updated OV-10 concept. They are pretty cheap to fly and can have a third of the plane shot to crap and survive as well as protecting the pilot like no other thing in the air. They were also designed in an era before precision munitions were exactly precise, before sensor fusion, etc., ad nauseum. We don't run up against a lot of enemy tank combatants these days. Yeah, they F-ed stuff up in Desert Storm, but they were designed to combat thousands of soviet block tanks pouring in to western Europe. However, it is designed to fight a war that never really happened. The A-10 is cool and awesome and I am sad to see it go (eventually). About time for the Air Force to really move full steam ahead with a light ground support air craft. ![]()
